POWERFUL TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS...

When software becomes central to how your customers run their businesses, reliability isn’t optional.

Neither is having the right technology partner behind it.

HydroApps provides software designed specifically for the complex world of commercial aquatic facility management. What began as technology developed within an engineering organization eventually grew into a business of its own, helping aquatic facilities manage everything from staffing and scheduling to compliance, equipment, pool testing and day-to-day operations.

As HydroApps grew, however, the technology supporting the platform needed to grow with it.

The company was already in the process of moving away from older technology, but the transition needed to be completed. The platform needed more stability. Customer requests needed attention. Hosting needed to be expanded. And HydroApps wanted a partner that could provide more visibility into the work happening behind the scenes.

They weren’t looking to start over.

They needed a partner who could help them finish what had already been started, strengthen the foundation underneath it and create room for what could come next.

That’s where Swip Systems came in.

Who Is HydroApps?

Managing a commercial aquatic facility involves considerably more than keeping the pool open.

There are employees to schedule and train, certifications to monitor, equipment to maintain, chemistry tests to complete and compliance requirements to be met. For organizations managing multiple locations, those responsibilities become even more complicated.

HydroApps brings those responsibilities into one technology ecosystem, giving aquatic facilities tools to manage their people, processes and facilities more efficiently.

The platform serves organizations such as municipal and public sector aquatic facilities, YMCAs, Universities, water parks, learn-to-swim organizations and other commercial aquatic facilities across the country. For the people using HydroApps every day, the software isn’t simply sitting in an office. It supports work happening throughout the facility, from managers building schedules to frontline staff members completing tasks poolside.

As the platform gained momentum, HydroApps needed its underlying technology to be just as capable as the customer businesses it was supporting.

The Challenge: A Growing Platform That Needed a Stronger Foundation

HydroApps came to Swip Systems during an important period in the platform’s evolution.

The company wanted more visibility into the work being completed, and they wanted to move from offshore to stateside. At the same time, a significant platform modernization was already underway, moving the software from an older environment to a more robust platform.

HydroApps needed a partner that could step into an existing web development and Cloud environment, understand what had already been built and help move the project forward without starting over.

This is where the value of a true strategic technology partnership became especially important.

Swip’s first job wasn’t to reinvent HydroApps. It was to understand the platform, modernize the technology and create a clear path forward.

The Solution: Modernize, Stabilize and Start Moving Again

One of the first priorities was completing the move to the newer platform.

Rather than abandoning the existing product and rebuilding from scratch, Swip helped HydroApps continue the modernization that was already underway. It’s an approach we often take when working with current and legacy business software: preserve the valuable business logic and functionality that already exists while improving the technology underneath it.

With the platform modernization moving forward, attention turned to another critical piece of the puzzle: the Cloud infrastructure.

Swip moved the platform to a more robust US-based Cloud environment and established greater redundancy and backup protection. The new Cloud infrastructure was also designed to respond to increases in demand. That mattered because HydroApps has a very specific version of a busy season.

While HydroApps users include both year-round and seasonal facilities, Memorial Day marks the unofficial beginning of summer for much of the country. This means seasonal aquatic facilities everywhere suddenly spring into action resulting in a significant increase in day-to-day users.  Employees are logging in. Lifeguards are completing training. Staff members are clocking in and out. Teams are conducting pool chemistry tests and managing the many tasks required to open and operate their facilities.

In other words, HydroApps experiences its largest annual surge in user activity as the summer swim season begins.

The updated infrastructure provided additional resources as usage increased, creating a more reliable experience during those critical periods instead of leaving the HydroApps team worrying about whether the technology can keep up.

At the same time, Swip began working through outstanding customer requests and moving platform development forward. What had once felt slower began gaining momentum.

And throughout the process, communication became part of the solution.

HydroApps had regular access to the Swip team through weekly and on-demand calls, project updates and ongoing communication, creating the visibility needed to understand not just what was being worked on, but how the platform was progressing.

Having a technology partner we can communicate with and a platform we can depend on gives us greater confidence heading into our busiest season,” said Scott Hester, managing partner of HydroApps. “We can focus more of our energy on serving our customers and continuing to improve the HydroApps platform rather than worrying about whether the technology can keep up.

It was Midwest-Shoring in action: combining technical capability with a domestic development partnership built around accessibility, communication and collaboration.

Taking HydroApps From the Office to the Pool Deck

Once the core platform was modernized and stabilized, HydroApps was in a much stronger position to think about what its customers needed next.

One of those needs was a mobile extension of their web app.

Aquatic facility employees don’t spend their entire day sitting at a desk. They’re checking water chemistry, moving around facilities, managing staff, and handling responsibilities where the work is actually happening.

Previously, some tasks could require employees to collect information in one place and enter it into the system later. That creates extra work and introduces opportunities for delays or errors.

A mobile application could change that.

Because the modernized HydroApps platform had been built around an API, Swip could create a new mobile experience that connected to the same core functionality powering the web application.

If you’re wondering what an API is and why it matters, think of it as the connection that allows different interfaces to access the same underlying business logic and information. HydroApps didn’t need an entirely separate system for mobile. The new app could utilize the underlying API that was already in place.

Swip built the mobile application on top of that existing foundation, extending HydroApps into the hands of the people using it poolside.

Now, staff members can interact with important tools where the work happens. Lifeguards can access scheduling information, request time off and pick up available shifts. Employees can complete forms and checklists without writing information down only to reenter it later. Pool chemistry information can be recorded in real time poolside rather than after they return to a computer.

For managers, that also means information can become available faster and provide greater visibility into what is happening across their teams and facilities.

This is where mobile app development becomes a strategic advantage. The value isn’t simply having an app. It’s putting the right functionality in the right place at the right time.

The Impact: A Platform Ready for Its Next Chapter

The transformation of HydroApps wasn’t one isolated software project.

It was a series of improvements that strengthened the entire technology foundation.

The platform is now running on more robust technology and more reliable Cloud infrastructure, with backups and redundancy designed to protect the system and resources that can scale with demand. Long-standing customer requests have been addressed, and the development process is moving forward with greater visibility.

Most importantly, HydroApps can spend less time worrying about whether its technology will support its customers during critical periods and more time focusing on serving them and improving the product.

What Comes Next?

HydroApps now has a modernized web platform, scalable Cloud infrastructure, and a mobile application connected through the same core technology. The conversation can shift from fixing what wasn’t working to exploring what could make the platform even better.

That includes looking at how AI will support the HydroApps ecosystem of users. As we’ve discussed in our work around how AI can connect and extend existing software, the strongest AI opportunities often come after a business has created a solid technology foundation.

The question becomes less about adding technology for technology’s sake and more about identifying where new capabilities could make the experience better for customers and easier for the people doing the work.

The Bottom Line: The Right Technology Partner Changes What’s Possible

There’s a significant difference between hiring someone to complete development tasks and finding a technology partner who understands where your business is trying to go.

HydroApps already had a valuable product and deep knowledge of the aquatic industry. What it needed was a technology foundation and development partnership capable of supporting that vision. Swip Systems was able to step into an existing platform, help complete its modernization, strengthen its infrastructure, move outstanding development priorities forward and build an entirely new mobile experience on top of the technology already in place.

That breadth matters.

Additionally, the success and satisfaction of HydroApps users has resulted in multiple requests to utilize the platform beyond solely aquatics. As a result HydroApps understands the fundamental processes of hiring employees, developing leaders, scheduling staff, maintaining facilities, managing equipment, documenting incidents, inspecting assets and ensuring compliance are common to most organizations and their facilities. Regardless of whether the organization managed an aquatic center, a university recreation facility, a destination resort, or a military installation, the discipline required to operate safely and effectively were fundamentally the same.

This realization has identified an opportunity that extends beyond improving aquatics only operational software. It is to help a much broader ecosystem of organizations become more informed, more connected, and more capable of learning from their own operations every day.

Because businesses don’t always need to throw out what they have and start over. Sometimes the smartest path forward is finding the right partner to understand what’s already working, fix what isn’t and build the next chapter from there.

If your technology has more potential than your current systems or development resources are allowing you to realize, AI apps, web application development, and mobile development may be pieces of the solution.

Sometimes what you really need is a partner who can see, and support, the whole picture.
